Visit Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in the north of Rwanda where about 300 mountain gorillas live. There are five habituated gorilla families – Amahoro A, Amahoro B, “Group 13”, Sabinyo, Umubano and Susa - each of the groups allows up to 8 participants per day. You can track gorillas, climb the Visoke volcano, track the golden monkeys or visit the Karisoke Research Centre, which Dian Fossey the famous primatologist set up, or visit local villages. The Parc National des Volcans (PNV) is part of the Virunga Conservation Area and covers more than 125 km². Kigali City tour: the colourful markets, genocide memorials and craft centres are the main areas of interest. In Rwanda you will find all over the country Memorials to remember the genocide of 1994. The most important Genocide Memorials are those of Kigali (Gisozi) where the history of the genocide is explained. A visit to the genocide memorial is for most visitors an emotional event.

ITINERARY OF RW1

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Volcanoes NP

Meet and greet at the Kigali International Airport by your driver-guide. Depending on your arrival time, your driver-guide may propose you a visit of Kigali city which includes the Genocide Memorial centre at Gisozi. Transfer to Kinigi at the foothills of the Volcanoes. Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & transfer to Kigali.

After breakfast, you will depart for the headquarters of the Park where your driver-guide will accomplish the necessary formalities for you. You will meet your ranger guide(s) for a briefing about the greatest animal experience ever!

After the trekking, lunch and transfer to Kigali. On your way to Kigali, several stops will be made to admire the scenery. Rwanda is the country with over thousand hills! O/N: Hotel Chez Lando or Hotel des Mille Collines (B-L-D).

Day 3: Kigali visit and Departure

Pick up at your hotel, depending on your departure time and if you missed the opportunity the first day, you will have your Kigali city trip including the Genocide Memorial centre at Gisozi. Transfer to the Airport for your departure. (BB)

RWANDA TOUR RW2: GORILLAS IN RWANDA (4 Days)

 Visit Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in the north of Rwanda where about 300 mountain gorillas live.  The Parc National des Volcans (PNV) is part of the Virunga Conservation Area and covers more than 125 km². PNV is home of five  Virunga volcanoes: Sabyinyo (3.674 m), Gahinga (3.474 m), Bisoke (3711 m), Muhabura (4.127 m), and the Karisimbi, the highest volcano with an altitude of 4.507 m. All five volcanoes are extinct, the active ones are located in Congo. Two of them erupted recently; the Nyiragongo erupted in January 2002 and Nyamulangira in July 2002. You can track gorillas, climb the Visoke volcano, track the golden monkeys or visit the Karisoke Research Centre, which Dian Fossey the famous primatologist set up, or visit local villages.

 

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Arrival

Arrive at Kanombe (Kigali) airport. Meet and greet before transferring to Kigali City. Drive the three hours North of Kigali to Kinigi through Ruhengeri. DAY 2: Parc National des Volcans: Gorilla tracking

Transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters to track gorillas in Parc National des Volcans. Gorilla tracking through the forest, hills and swamps can be tough, arduous and tiring, sometimes taking up to 8 hours in the forest. But coming face to face with the great primates is well worth the effort.

 DAY 3: In Parc National des Volcans

In Parc National des Volcans: Either go gorilla tracking (on payment of US$500 gorilla permit supplement at time of booking)

Alternatively (on payment of supplement), do any of the following options; Track the golden monkeys or climb the awesome Visoke volcano, or trek to Karisoke Research Centre which was set up by the famous primatologist Dian Fossey, or visit local communities. After the trekking, lunch at Ruhengeri and transfer to Kigali. On your way to Kigali, several stops will be made to admire the scenery. Rwanda is the country with over thousand hills! DAY 4: City tour and fly out

Time permitting, go for a tour of the city (optional). This includes a visit to a genocide memorial. Traditional crafts can be bought. Transfer to airport for your flight. [Approximate driving time: 3omins]

RWANDA TOUR RW3 - GORILLAS IN RWANDA AND UGANDA OR CONGO (8 Days)

This safari starts and finishes in Kigali. [One PNV gorilla permit is included in the cost but the other gorilla trackings require a supplement to be paid at time of booking.]

 

Visit the three operational gorilla countries of the world – Rwanda for Parc National des Volcans (PNV), Uganda for Bwindi and Mgahinga; and Congo for Virunga National Park. PNV, Virunga in Congo and Mgahinga are on either side of the misty Virungas.

 

The tour starts with Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda, continuing to Mgahinga and then to Bwindi in Uganda. Clients have an opportunity to track gorillas for a total of FOUR times in the three countries. Tracking and seeing these great primates in their different, natural surroundings is a memorable experience, with each park presenting its unique attractions.  Other activities possible include; tracking the golden monkeys, climbing a volcano, nature walks in the forests for birds, or visiting local villages.

DAY 4: To Uganda

Transfer to Kisoro and on to Mgahinga Gorilla Park in Uganda. [Approximate driving time: 2 hours] Either guided nature walk in Gahinga or climb a volcano, visit the natural, beautiful-looking Lake Mutanda, surrounded by the volcanoes, take a walk on the shores. Lunch in Kisoro.

DAY 5: Gorilla tracking or drive to Bwindi

EITHER: Gorilla tracking in Nkuringo, Ishongi or Congo (on payment of US$500 gorilla permit supplement at time of booking, and visa fees) O/N: Travellers Rest Hotel (FB)

OR: A gentle drive to Bwindi for gorilla tracking or a nature walk in Bwindi, the largest gorilla park in the world and a heritage site. [Approximate driving time: 4 hours]

DAY 6: In Bwindi; gorilla tracking or guided walks

Either track gorillas again (on payment of US$500 gorilla permit supplement at time of booking) or go for a guided nature walk in the forest for butterflies, plant and bird species. Alternatively visit local villages or take the Buhoma Village Tourist Walk organised by the local community.  O/N: Buhoma Lodge (FB)

DAY 7: Back to Rwanda

Leave for Kigali in Rwanda. Continue to Rwanda passing the Katuna border. Time permitting, go for a tour of the city including shopping. [Approximate driving time: 6 hours]

DAY 8: City tour and out

The half day Kigali City trip (optional) includes a visit to the Genocide Memorial Centre at Gisozi, which takes a few hours. Transfer to the airport for your flight. [Approximate driving time: 30mins]

RWANDA TOUR RW 4: CHIMPS IN RWANDA (5 Days)

This safari starts and finishes in Kigali.

The tour takes visits Nyungwe, in South West of Rwanda, a huge afro-montane forest. With over 10000sq.km in size, Nyungwe is the undisputed giant in Central Africa. The natural forest is renowned for its large troops of colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, butterflies and a rich variety of orchids. Over 300 bird species have been recorded. The terrain in Nyungwe Forest is rugged and steep, and you will be at relatively high elevation, and it can rain at any time of the trek so come with appropriate clothing.

 

Visit some cultural sites en route - the Museum in Butare and the palace at Nyanza.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Arrival

Arrive at Kanombe (Kigali) airport. Meet and greet before transferring to Kigali City. City tour in Kigali (optional) including a visit to the genocide sites, the art and craft centre.

DAY 2: To Nyungwe Forest

Start for Nyungwe Forest National Park. Along the way, make stops at places of interest including local markets, the traditional palace of Rwanda’s Former King in Nyanza. In Butare, visit the Botanical Gardens and a cultural museum. Drive past green fields of tea scattered across the hillsides and the small wooden houses unique to the areas surrounding Nyungwe Forest. [Approximate driving time: 5 hours]

DAY 3: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest

Go chimp tracking, the largest in Central Africa.

DAY 4: Nyungwe Forest

EITHER Go chimp tracking, OR Guided nature walk in the forest to see a variety of animals and some of the three hundred bird species found here, which include the Rwenzori turaco and black and white casqued hornbill.  Go on an escorted walk in search of large groups of colobus monkeys - sometimes as many as 400 in a group.  Picnic lunch. Return late afternoon.
